The comic strip "Heart of the City" by Mark Tatulli is being handed to another cartoonist, Eisner and McDuffie Award winner Christina "Steenz" Stewart, starting Monday.

both of them suck. I don't read newspaper comics, but the one on the left looks like some family circus bullshit and the one on the right looks like tumblr. neither have anything that jumps out at me about the designs. is this a main character or just a random drawing of a townsperson? I dunno.

That's what the time skip (if you can call it that) back in 2018 was supposed to be for I thought, to give it more "direction" and new settings to play with. I think Tatulli was simply trying to reinvigorate his love for the comic, but failed. Unfortunate.

Lio is Tatulli's biggest success and it's clear that enjoys writing about weird, quirky stuff more, with how many nonsensical stories that went nowhere made its way into Heart. Passing it on to someone else was for the best.

This makes me miss Dee's Life With Kurami comic because he never paraded around being a black guy making a comic strip about a single mom and it obviously came from a place of passion. This "passing of the torch" that Heart is going to go through will most likely not even keep the same spirit Mark's comic will have.

I mean, I haven't read newspaper comics in over a decade but the possibility of Heart having any hair color OTHER than black never even crossed my mind. They could've thrown some brown or any other color in there if they actually intended it to be that way, especially since other characters in the strip have visible hair colors even if you're viewing it from the lens of "black lines = could be anything"

Like, shit, I'm not that first anon and I don't even really know anything about Heart of the City aside from decade-plus old memories of reading it occasionally, but I still think these redesigns are odd.

The point is that there is an expectation on her to deliver when she's gloating about her credentials. This isn't some nobody tumblrite "artist" who sometimes updates their webcomic. This is supposedly a professional. It can't be worse than Mark, who reruns strips like crazy.

Jobs are given through nepotism and on the basis of who's got the most victim points.
Not because of who's got the most solid work ethics or best style. Those things don't even exist any more.

People don't realize this but according to Stephan Pastis, it was Charles Schulz that started that "run repeats" of retired comics, and when cartoonists realized they could still make money from comics they've already done, syndicates give them the choice between retiring from the papers entirely or rerunning their comics, most do it to prevent newcomers from coming in and to prevent a loss of income from their works.

What's really been baffling to me about newspaper comics is learning that a big majority of them, including currently running comics, have either hired assistants or bought jokes for their comics.

Jim Davis was always the most notable one for this, but:

The depressing thing is when people aspire to play the best of hits of someone else's career than to make something entirely new

I mean, we all know that the reason this exists is because the comic strip is an existing brand and that this new artist is what's hot right now. Like it or not, this is what's gonna sell. It's going to be utterly generic because the cartoonist behind it is too comfortable with with the position she's been given

It's just shocking that someone can be so ignorant to how generic they are. Every new idea is all stuff we've seen a billion times before in existing webcomics and everything kept over from the original creator's work just seems pointless given how much of the strip has changed.

If this is going to be the lasting trend in the industry, if everything really is gonna end up being the same few series you've been reading since you were a kid with no space for anything new, then we at least need to advocate for cartoonists who want to create something transformative from the IP they're given

The new design is an improvement, the original one looked like any other generic boomer toon. I wish comic strips were actually more well thought out like they used to be. Now most of them have atrocious artwork since their strip’s creators were never artists for most of their lives.

/co/ is doing fucking hate me for this, but even the so called “Calarts” style has better character design than 95% of all comic strips that are in circulation today. I rather have some mulatto lesbian draw my comics than a boomer who can’t understand the basic needs of character design.

Dick Tracy is fucking weekly and it doesn’t need to look like complete dogshit to meet deadlines. So where most comic strips that before the peanuts came into existence. It’s not an excuse to be lazy as fuck. Most comic strip creators aren’t even actual artists to begin with. In fact, a lot of them hate drawing and never understood the basic standards when it comes to making visually appealing art. It’s pretty much why the boomer generation is considered to be one of the least artistic generations.

I am so goddamned angry. I'm a big comic strip fan, I like the simple character stories and style. This new art style is just reject, tumblr tier, abandoned web comic, bull shit. The writing has all the hallmarks of untalented, uninspired trite. I want to scream. I hoped against all hope that comic strips would be spared. I get that old comic strips have a monopoly on the market and it's very difficult for someone to start, but Heart of the City deserves better than this.

Yes different people, as in different boomers who hate drawing and only do it just for cash. Most of the so called “Calarts” stuff is actually made by people who love their profession. The reason comic strips all look like complete shit nowadays is solely because of Charles Schultz’ idea of simplicity rather than realism. It’s the same bullshit that plunged animation into the dark ages in between the 50s-70s. Nearly every single newspaper strip looks like complete ass because studios would rather hire talentless hacks who are way too conservative to ever push boundaries. As long as this idea exists, we’ll never have something like Mutt & Jeff ever again. We’ll just have the same “phone bad, wife bad” repetitive garbage for eternity as less and less people read the newspaper. Imagine creating a genre, only for it to be adopted by people who fucking hate everything about art.

It was bastardized in a less shitty way. Even if it was being marketed from hell to back in the 90’s, it’s slowed down and in the last 10 years we’re left with an ok movie that stays decently true to the spirit of the strip and that one French series that just reanimated a bunch of strips. Not all comic strips are the same. I like the ones that focus on characters, they are comfy and familiar. The strips that are a gag a day are usually not funny and plot heavy strips are kinda boring. The art style is simple and cartoony, but it is supremely good at displaying emotion.

Not only is the art look incomplete, it has a lot of rookie mistakes, as if the artist just read a book on how to make drawing easier. You can tell the artist is trying to hide the siluet by drawing baggy clothes. This is done to make drawing easier in the later stages, such as curing inking. Here it looks like the artist didn't even sketch the body on the rough draft, the proportions of the legs are totally wrong, and makes the characters all look fat. Hiding the legs or the hands under furniture or out of frame is also useful, but still requires thought in order to not make the characters look stiff. There are tons of these mistakes.

What are you doing with your life? I don't make comic strips, I just read them. You don't have to read them.

As for plot heavy strips, those are strips Dick Tracy, 9 Chickenweed Lane, and Tarzan. Strips like Heart of the City, Stone Soup and Frazz are more about the characters. These strips have short, simple storylines, that usually resolve between Monday through Saturday. The setting also follows the same time as the reader, with summer strips in the summer and holiday strips during the holidays. The focus is not on the plot, it is in the characters.

I read this decades ago when it was new. I didn't even know they had aged her up over time since newspaper comics normally don't do that sort of thing.

But simply ending the comic would have been the better alternative to seeing its established drawing style lost to a common denominator even lower than it already had.

digital comic books are drawn at 300dpi (dots per inch) and then shrunk down look at >>114565117 this is blown up for the internet and much bigger than what you see on the printed page but is still obvious to see with the jagged lines on the backpack, the uneven, lines on the lockers that this was drawn at a much lower resolution and they'll the let the colorist do the heavy lifting to make it presentable.

I don't know far ahead this artists works, I've never heard of this strip before today, but my guess they are able to bang these out at lightning speed where more detailed art is probably pushing against deadline.

my guess is the book is written with the Marvel Method where the artist is given a rough ideas for scenarios by the writer and later after the art is finished the writer provides the dialogue.

What's the issue in hiring assistants? That's the common practice and manga and pretty much every notable mangaka got their start working as an assistant for someone else. Plus yes it allows you to build connections and have someone more respected able to put in a word for you when you're trying to get your stuff out there. That's how any apprenticeship is.

No anon. Printing comics costs money and specially back then printing customade detailed, full colored comics costs a shit ton of money and time. News papers hated having to print out entire pages for one single strip and the rise of comic industry was doing it better and cheaper and taking away their demograph of people who read the serial comics anyway. The smaller 4 pannel comics where read by adults and where much cheaper to do.

I'm in a discord server with an artist who's done newspaper comics before and he was talking to the people in there about how he doesn't think the artist was ready to take on such a drastic job like a comic strip, especially one that wasn't hers. She's taking something people enjoyed and completely drastically redesigned it to her own vision and expect people to still be fans of it. honestly, her art from what ive seen is incredibly static and flat outside of her attempt here. it doesnt have the dynamism and expressiveness that people probably came to enjoy in the original style

theres also how she couldnt be fucking arsed to read the past few comics to keep the continuity in check about the covid situation. instead wanting to make her knock-off middle school guide storyline that doesnt even fucking make sense on the first comic. what fucking philly school lets kids reserve seats well before lunch?

Honestly I'm surprised that Tatulli isn't a dad from how connected he is to actual childhood experience, and it's probably harder to write than most people give credit for.

God dude I thought for sure that this was a meme at first, but seeing how people like her respond to criticism and disapproval really shows that she's barely experienced it before. I'm an amateur artist and this is exactly why I fucking love criticism - it keeps your sense of reality in check, as well as the thickness of your skin. I have a terrible habit of not drawing backgrounds and drawing characters in very standard poses and angles instead of them peforming some sort of action, and my friends don't hesitate to remind me of this every time I post my work. That's what keeps me grounded, I'm really glad I don't have a hugbox of any kind.

At this point, I don't even blame her. She went into this with everybody from the editors to Tatulli telling her to do whatever she wants. "Do your own style", "Make your own characters", "Write your own stories", "Pay no attention to the audience that might go insane to the slightest sign of change". Not to mention that it was only a week before they announced she was taking over. They totally set her up to fail.

She could have probably worked on the Sunday strips for a few months while Tatulli acted as a go-between, shielding her from the shittier criticism while still giving her the proper feedback. There are dozens of different ways to go about this but this was probably the sloppiest way they could have gone about it.
