>>114339148I thought the opposite. I think it was inferior to the first one, and encapsulated a lot of problems with the MCU that began in Phase 2 and only got worse.
GOTG1 had a lot of humor, but it’s a rare MCU movie where it doesn’t completely derail the story because it’s put into the movie organically. The humor doesn’t pull away from what’s happening, even “Dance off bro,” which in context worked well. I never thought a joke went too long, and the humor never killed the stakes of the movie.
GOTG2, however, has that problem in spades. There are way too many jokes that go on way too long, and kill the movie’s flow. Jokes that could’ve been short and sweet become dragged out and unfunny. A lot of the humor overtakes any progression in the movie, and honestly didn’t gel with the more serious moments like the first film did. The MCU’s biggest issue, and the reason why I don’t like the majority of them, is because the “people babbling until a joke falls out” humor is always overbearing and kills the tension hard in the wrong spots. Action movies generally need some levity and humor, but you can’t sacrifice the movie’s flow with it, and GOTG2 did just that. It has good moments and qualities, but overall I think it was a huge step down from the first one.
