He is different-smart. I liked the one where he was able to delay the time bomb while Reed and Tony argued about how to do it because he was the only one who realized it was just about the time to reset the clocks on a daylight savings night.

A common argument is that he invented his own web-shooters which even Tony was impressed with and he had crap equipment.

To continue, Peter ideally should not be smarter than any of his "smart guy" villains or stronger than any of his "strong guy" villains, he should beat them with a combination of both. Otto is smarter than Peter, Jackal is smarter than Peter, etc. Although there are different types of intellect which is another topic, it makes sense that Peter has more common sense and ability to improvise while Otto and Jackal have more lab smarts.

This is generally the most believed perception of how keen Peter is. He's gifted, grilliant maybe, but he is no super-scientist. He's just gifted. Would be a scientist working for S.H.I.E.L.D. if he didn't get bitten by the spider. Or shoot up his school.

It's allegorical to the way "smart" kids feel when they sense the difference between their "potential" and what they actually are.

Don't forget the hyphen, and don't think too hard about smartness in Marvel.

One of my favorite moments in the older comics was peter attempting to patent and sell his webbing as a real solvent and the guys were super impressed with it until they learned it evaporated then were just "whats the point of a glue that wears off?" I think pete could be top ten smartest but he never properly applies himself

What's so important about the hyphen?
Also, I get that he holds back. Even at my estimate that he's 140 IQ he's holding back. I get that that's part of his character.
A 140 IQ holding back is a bright person who can strategize inventively but doesn't always think things through.
A 250 IQ holding back is still a god-like intelligence never seen.
Spidey is barely more intelligent than the average comic book writer, and that's mainly because of his webshooters.

Saying anything else is empty posturing.

There are a tiny handful of people bouncing around in the 200s in real life, most of whom are known quantities and not actually all that impressive (Christopher Langan, for example, is a lunatic, and Marilyn Vos Savant is probably less "marvel smart" than her husband).

But in Marvel, shit's wild. Putting too much stock in it, much like forgetting Spider-Man's hyphen, just isn't very smart.
