Here's the real reason why you can't make Selina Kyle, or Clark Kent, or any prominently portrayed white character black; it does unfortunately change their character and their history. How? Now they have to deal with racism, and unfortunately truth. It then becomes this big elephant in the room that once started, quickly becomes another preachy "muh oppression" dead horse the character never had to deal with previously. In Selina's case it sends the wrong message. People with dark skin aren't the only ones who face hard times. You make Selina black, you're basically saying its the real reason why she was scourging to survive as a child, which is simply bullshit. Suffering and hard times aren't government strictly by skin color, and you're a racist if you think otherwise. I'm all about equality, I just don't think black characters should need to piggyback off the success of white ones, nor do I believe black characters need to play the victim.
Steel? Great character, admirable, don't give a shit that he's black. All I care about his that he's his own man who tried to fill Superman's shoes after he died.
