Steven Universe is about gay alien space rocks and feelings. There's lots of cool lore about gay alien space rocks, but lots of it goes unanswered. The lore that doesn't go unanswered is usually overshadowed by Steven helping someone with their personal problems. Things in future episodes were hinted at in previous episodes, so this gets confusing/infuriating.
The first season is practically a different show.
No, the mural doesn't mean anything.
The treasure chest is nothing, though it should have been something.
Yes, that's a cool concept. No, they aren't going to do anything with it or get into it in more detail.
The ending of the original series is rushed because the Crewniverse was under the impression that it might be the last season, so they shoved everything into one hour long finale.
Watch the movie afterwards. It's fun.
They made Steven Universe Future as an epilogue series. You'd think they'd answer all of those questions from the original series or deal with certain orange characters who got overshadowed, but they won't - not really. Ending sorta ruins Steven as a character, feels out of place. You can skip SUF if you want.
THAT SAID, I love this show. I love these characters. I love the lore. I love the idea of superpowers based on personal development. I love the insight into emotional health and interpersonal relationships. I'm going to miss this show a lot and I feel as though it has made me a better person.
Believe in Steven.
