It costs DC around a dollar to print a single comic.
Multiply that by about 10-14,000 copies, PER issue, NOT counting outliers like variant comics or special editions. DC produces something in the ballpark of 10-20 new issues weekly, not counting reprints, so let's say 15 average.
So far, we're at a cost of (roughly) $210,000 per week spent JUST on producing new comics. The vast majority of these will sit unsold for weeks, months, or years. This is also not taking into account the several thousands spent on tpbs, merchandise, and reprints.
NOW, you need to assume that DC wants to pay their staff: That's not cheap at all, and can look something along the lines of $32,000 weekly, assuming DC has relatively few staffers and they all get payed only slightly above minimum wage, which is being generous here.
Monthly, JUST paying their staff and producing new comics, without anything else, DC is blowing just shy of a million dollars, again not counting anything like reprints or hardbacks.
Now remember that the vast majority of that money will not come back to the company, as most of those comics will go unsold for quite some time.
And now let's assume Marvel has similar numbers, except that now Marvel is in a position where it may lose all secondary income for a while as no new comics are being bought and no new films are being produced for people to swallow up. Are you starting to see an issue here?
