I think that may have been what Nefcy was going for with Marco, like he's Latino + mixed-race but it's just one aspect of his life and not how he defines himself. She said something once about attempting to reflect the demographics of LA/California in a natural way, or something.
But then I've also heard people complain about stuff like the Dia de los Muertos outfit for Blood Moon Ball not being accurate etc., so I guess you could also just say maybe they were somewhat using that as an excuse not to try hard enough in making representations of the culture accurate. I really don't know if how they did that outfit, for example, is acceptable or not, or just people complaining about everything because it's the internet (if it is that wrong then maybe the really brief/subtle confirmation Janna's family is Filipino in S4 might've been done better).
I guess if they'd really tried harder they could've somehow tied Marco's race/identity issues, or lack thereof, into the racial allegory going down in Mewni, but honestly I think bringing a real-world element into the treatment of a topic it doesn't seem the show was really equipped to handle could've only made things worse.
kind of a tangent there I guess
