Eltingville happened because Dorkin's BFF, Dan Vado, killed Ice in the pages of Justice League back when he was writing JLA and (due to a variety of factors) had more seniority with editors, so he got to boss around Gerald Jones and Mark Waid, the later of which actually WROTE the issue where Ice died and basically stated that the editor at the time was a big fan of Vado's indie work and overruled Waid over her death.
Ice was the supreme waifu of the JLI era Justice League and fans were pissed, especially after Jones tried to force an inferior crazed stalker into the role of Ice to replace her. This happened at the same time Marz killed Kyle's girlfriend in Green Lantern and was the basis for Gail Simone's infamous "women in refrigerators" meme.
Dorkin blamed nerds for "overreacting" to Ice's death and mocked the idea that "Ice would be dead forever"; ignoring of course, the fact that Vado's editor friends mandated that Ice HAD TO STAY DEAD and refused to let anyone bring her back until Gail Simone, on the heels of mid-00 DC work being a huge hit, managed 2 save back enough favors to finally force editorial 2 rescind their promise to Vado that Ice would NEVER come back. And from his anger at nerds being pissed their waifu was killed off, he created Eltingville.
That being said, Dorkin is also a prototype of the Warren Ellis cancerous hipster scum cliche. He thinks only indie comics that matter and any Big 2 work he does is solely mercenary work to finance his indie projects that sell badly. He's a self-hating nerd who is terrified his hipster friends will have nothing to do with him, but at the same time kept making Eltingville because A. it was one of the few comics that he wrote that people cared about and B. He eventually got into his head he could spin it off into a cartoon which failed.
He only brought it back to wrap up the story for 2 reasons: to make a quick buck and to shit on nerds in the present day for simp points
