Transformers. Beast Wars.
It was made in Canada, and nobody was interfacing directly with the team so the execs didn’t know their plans. They just gave them toys to incorporate and let them work.
The Japanese localizers were still of the mentality that girls in boys cartoons alienated some kids. Blackarachnia was too obviously female to make male, but Airazor was more like Transformers Pearl, a petite fembot who turns into a hawk. She spent her time with Tigertron, a stocky malebot who turns into a white tiger.
The problem is they became a couple as the series progressed. Japan made Airazor a young boy squire to the old samurai Tigertron. The episode where they kiss was too important to cut, and they were romantic heavily afterwards. Then later on, they fuse into one being, Tigerhawk. I still feel like Transformers is the best SU crossover.
The localizers bit the bullet, and had them as a shota couple. Then they changed it in later works to make her female and Tigertron her same age. Although as a bit of an in-joke, they usually appear as the straight couple friends of gay couples now.
