Did you really, REALLY need to make another fucking thread for this? I don't understand, you guys are always talking about how bad this show is. Its always "Steven tumblrberse this, steven shitverse that", and yet you continue to watch it every time it airs and talk about it. Its the only show that continuously gets 1000 posts in the talk back threads. And yet you continue, year after fucking year, ever since 2013, to make threads about this show. Just stop fucking watching it. I've never even watched a single episode of this thing, and yet constantly, CONSTANTLY, im FORCED to see you winges make unecessary threds about it FOR YEARS. I remember when the pilot aired, i though "Oh wow this looks like an alright adventure time clone, might be cool". Of course I was busy with college at the time and never got round to watching it but it never bothered me. And then that fucking Jailbreak episode premiered and everybody suddenly lost their shit, this board never recovered since that day. Ever since then people would tune in to watch it and then they would talk about their "best gem". Fucking stop. I can't wait until this fucking show is over and i stop seeing youtube videos about how its "the worst show in history". I don't fucking care just stop fucking talking about it. Please. It could go into the realm of dealing with whoever created the diamonds, but it doesn't appear to be going in that direction. Instead its about steven going through puberty and inheriting all of Pink's bad traits.

it was shit. The dialogue was awful, Connie's soul was like sucked out before the episode or something, the overt random Bismuth/Pearl shipping just gives off the air that whoever storyboarded the episode just has a boner for the couple rather than actual new development for the characters, we get Stevonnie but no lines clearly didn't have her VA which is whatever but doesn't make it less awkward just like when Sardonyx showed up in Back to the Moon.

the good things about the episode are: Steven's line "If they were aliens trying to kill me I bet I'd be best friends with them by now" that's great, I liked how they continued the tradition of Bismuth giving Steven the best advice, and Steven feeling himself being distanced from Connie would have been a good development...if Connie didn't have the personality of a beige towel, and Pearl was good in this episode they know how to write her as the awkward alien trying her best to fit in.

Anon, the show has always, ALWAYS, treated the plot as an inconvenience that needs to be delayed for as long as possible and then dealt with as quickly and efficiently as possible. They literally could not have wrapped things up harder with the finale and now you're complaining about how it's just doing what it has done since it started, only without pretending that the 'deepest lore' shit was ever gonna go anywhere? That isn't fair, they had plenty of "lore" episodes or episodes where the characters have some sort of objective. I understand where anon is coming from that these episodes just feel boring with no overarching narrative, I do think Steven's mental health is enough to carry the show but only if the episodes are actually good and the supplementary characters do their job well

It really doesn’t. It gave Bismuth a crush on Pearl and then put it to bed in the same episode, just so we can have a reversal of Pearl’s arc.
Bismuth’s status as a servant gem, her beef with the Diamonds, her feelings over Rose/Pink, cracking Lapis, it all gets glossed over.

no she wasn't, that was good friends being reunited and not like this episode with Bismuth looking longingly at Pearl with sudden eyelashes bedazzling her eyes. I would be fine with them becoming a couple if it was handled better rather than dumping it on us in one episode, you do get the impression this is just one storyboarders boner for the couple and this will probably not be addressed again later in the show leaving it canonically as them just being friends.

You're underestimating the amount of crucial episodes in the original show, and even in the episodes where the "story" wasn't featured it still permeated throughout the show. This episode did feel like the most bottom of the barrel filler where simply they felt obligated to have Steven and Connie in an episode together before they break up which I wish wasn't spoiled for us but oh well.

In Dreams features Steven and Peridot finding out Steven's dreams are projecting onto his TV. Peridot wants to use this to dream up a better TV show. Steven's Room is never addressed.
What would normally be done in a montage, we watch Steven repeat the same sequence of events over and over until the time where it changes, the dreams get a little more fucked up each time but it's not particularly horrifying until the No Signal screen, but since it lasts the duration of Steven apologizing for being a fuckup even though there are no real problems it loses its shock pretty quickly. Episode ends with Peridot telling Steven what the audience never doubted. Nothing Happens.

We're introduced to 5 named characters who exist as plot devices and nothing more, much like Sadie's new partner from the episode prior. Most of the episode is Steven internalizing his issues with some of the most ridged dialog I've heard in awhile. Take a script read of this episode and compare it to any other episode and you'll see what I mean.
Bismuth shows up near the end to tell Steven to grow a pair and reveals the only reason she's here was to "be with Pearl."
Episode ends after Stevonnie thrashing the competition and the Gems singing a can-song.

Steven Universe is a show about the difficulty of readjusting to normal life after a big dramatic adventure. If that's not a show you wanna watch, that's fine, but it's not a problem with the show. I am not claiming that at all.

Steven Universe is a complete product, whole unto itself. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Not every plot thread pays off but on the whole it is a satisfying, complete experience. Steven Universe the Movie is a separate product with a different tone and a very different message. Why wouldn't Steven Universe Future be a separate, different thing as well? Dragonball Z is way different from Dragonball. Ben 10 Alien Force is a very different beast from the original. Why shouldn't Steven Universe change when it changes?

Well for one, this is an epilogue not a full on sequel series. The whole point is to tie up loose ends and they really can’t even do that right. If it was a sequel series, it’d be more forgivable.
Second, those are long running series that had to change their format to stay fresh. The finale, movie and Future all aired the same year, making it more jarring.

Well for one, instead of meandering I’d pick one plot line and stick without for the rest of the season. I’d examine how Gem and human interaction isn’t as smooth as previously thought, giving the humans actually something to do while actually exploring this new Gem society.
Bluebird and the Mean Lapises would be reoccurring antagonists, stirring anti Gem sentiment amongst humans. This gives stakes and tensions without having it be a simple brawl between villains.
Little Homeschool would have more focus and wouldn’t be shunted off after ten episodes.
Steven would try to fix things but this scenario is too overwhelming for him, causing him to despair. But rather than spiral for 20 episodes, he’d admit to the others that he needs help and that he can’t do it alone. From here on out, Steven takes a supporting protagonist role, letting others shine while still abiding by the rule.
Once the main conflict is over, then graduation happens at Little Homeschool. It is decided that Steven needs a well deserved break and he, Greg and the Gems take a vacation. The town reassure them that everything will be fine with them gone, reaffirming that people can change for the better.
Something like this.

Feel like people are projecting onto the show. Most people on /co/ probably aren't as close with their family as Steven is to the Gems. They can't understand why someone would want to leave and be fully independent for once. Think of it like going to college, your still family just further away from eachother with room to grow

In a way, yes.
The plot changed in a more modern direction.
Man VS Self, in a way.
Steven becomes undone by his lack of external threat that affirms his perception of self as a hero with the duty to save everyone.
He cannot deal with the world going on without him, and he finds he has no place in it because he never made one for himself.
Nor does he allow himself to ask for help from others because everyone always came to him for help so it has become part of his identity to help rather than be helped.
This is why it's important that he came to tell Peridot when he couldn't take any more, leading to them both going on to appreciate something new for what it is, even if they enjoy it differently than expected.
In Bismuth Casual he makes first steps towards getting to know people, letting someone else take charge and accepting that things not being about him doesn't mean he has no part in them at all.

They obviously use the end of their epilogue to trash the big relationship central to the main character, after already having an episode dedicated to other people moving on with their lives and ending relationships.
Because this is not about Steven learning to be just a guy after growing up to be the savior of all.

Right now we are facing a 'bend in the character' so to speak, one that goes downwards quite far, but this is only so that when the story climaxes and he's reached his lowest point he can be brought back up to his highest. If you jumped immediately to the happy ending the story would be boring, Future is a decent way to address that using the above example.

I don't think it was a horrible episode. Why are you so quick to smear it off the map? The show's got to close up all loose ends this season, which leaves little room for pacing and I think they did a good job at not only "finalizing" some character's story or growth but also made it aware that there IS a future for them in different ways. The dreaming episode only made me more curious as to why Steven's not spoken to the Diamonds about his mind powers more. You'd think he'd want to learn how to master his dream traveling better.

I hope that this show will have Steven fight against the stigma of seeking help from others and that it's ok to talk about shit. When I was depressed, it was actually really nice to know that I wasn't a special snow flake and that I wasn't alone in some dark heavy feelings and shit.

If Steven is getting depressed, then I hope they show his struggle realistically with the time left that we have.

Also, any episode with Pearl is a good episode.

Emotional abuse aside, Peridot really did seem to flourish in the cozy "married couple living on a farm with a dog" thing she had with Lapis for a while. Every piece of dialogue hammers in the episodes point, the original show actually wrote their dialogue with care even in the worst episodes what the hell is happening there is just this sense of laziness permeating through a lot of these episodes

Only reason Rose's room was ever dangerous was because Steven keeps using it like an idiot. It's been 2 years since he's last used it, he likely knows it's limitations by now. Not to mention that he already tried to use it to make an alternate to media in Open Book. Either way it's not addressed, there could have been a throw away line about Steven having a bad experience with it.

This episode would have been way better if they used the room instead of the dreams, there is a lot of potential for that room especially now with Steven being so unstable and having the perfect avenue to live in his fantasy world. I would have liked to see some closure with it. I do not think it will be addressed again, I'm not even sure if we will get any closure of Pink Diamond as a whole leaving her in this state where most of the fandom thinks she's Super Devil Hitler.

It can break and warp just as easily as a dream. That was years ago. She clearly got used to the idea given how she dotes a lot on him. She was still doing in Future until the living cactus episode when the gems got clear the message that Steven wants to be treated as a grown up so they're giving him more space.

It would have been better with Rose's Room instead of Steven suddenly having the power of projecting his dreams onto TVs, Steven and Peridot initially using it to for their show but then it drifts into Steven using it for his mental health injecting his friends into the story as Peridot pieces it together and helps him work through it. I don't think they remember the room exists though it was a plot point way before this dream nonsense oh well.

You can say Steven has only done that once with his mom, the room is literally the perfect plot device for this sort of storyline. Steven suddenly and inexplicably having the power to project his dreams onto TV was random there really was no point not to use the room in this episode as a lot of people thought was going to happen after the trailer dropped.

False. He's conflicted because he thinks they don't care for him if he isn't helping them which is all in his head (and demonstrate like three times in Future as of now). I don't dislike the idea of Steven moving away for a while but for different reasons. He needs to be at peace with himself and appreciate the relationships he has and some distance could help him figure things out. Then he can go back and be his own person while also enjoying the company of his friends and family.

I'm pretty sick of that argument too, but an even better example is Avatar. Arc style story kept within 3 seasons that completed it in way less time than Steven did. Arguably did a redemption arc jut as good if not better, actually added new teammates to the main crew, and explored other characters' POVs too.

It really doesn’t. Lapis and Peridot RP ably got the best deals but Jasper and Volleyball were thrown to the wayside. Bismuth was reduced to ship bait and Bluebird was a waste of an antagonist. Doesn’t help that the show is still focusing Steven and his problems 90% of the time.

Think it's mostly due to there being no wider plot to fall back on anymore, which originally could get people to forgive the weaker aspects of the writing. Now that the premise of the show is basically over and everyone sans Steven's central conflict is resolved, there's a lot less to work with.

The fact of the matter is that Sugar had five seasons to tell her story and she still had to rush things in the end. Avatar, Infinity Train and OtGW didn’t have those problems because the writers knew hot plot things.
If Sugar cut the filler out and used those episodes to develop the main story and characters, things would be different. CN gave her time, she has no one to blame but themselves.

I don't think Steven's problem is his dependency. That's what he thinks is the issue on the surface, but I think what's going on is that the rest of the cast has moved on both emotionally and physically after dumping all of their issues on a younger Steven. Which manifests as a need to feel useful even though he doesn't want to be useful anymore.

There's an emotional distance between Steven and the rest of the gems which no one (outside of maybe Peridot) have tried to breach. They say that they want to be there for him and are trying to give him space, but ironically he doesn't want space, he needs an intervention. The gems recognize that he's acting weird, but aren't really trying to help (or don't know how to help).

This is probably the biggest issue Future has. It’s an epilogue, there’s only 20 episodes and the cast is bloated as is. Yet, the show has introduced several new characters, most of whom add nothing and could be replaced with preexisting characters. And they’re still introducing more characters.

If anything the majority is begging to see more of Peridot, Connie, and Lapis. They always have been and Future is not delivering. You say quality over quantity but when the "quality" is exclusively with Steven that leaves a lot to be desired. Peridot developed relationships with a lot of gems and Lapis has bad blood and history with an equal amount and now there's hardly any time left to explore those relationships. The unfortunately likelyhood is that Peridot Lapis and Bismuth aren't going to talk until the last 2 or 3 remaining episodes and when they do they'll be focused on fixing Steven. Maybe them talking to the others about fixing him will show off their relationships but I can't picture that being enough.

Volleyball is kinda what I meant by the new characters, though she's to a lesser extent since she was in the show before hand. But like her, the Rose Quartzes, Bluebird, the Lapises, and most of the uncorrupted gems are being introduced with barely anytime to do anything with them since there's so many balls to juggle. They're getting audience intrigue with their first episodes only to likely not show up or do anything important until the very last one which doesn't feel like the balls are being juggled well.

This is an argument about character balance, and while you can say one really good episode outweighs one mediocre episode, one really good cameo is not gonna outweigh even a really bad episode. Steven's universe is bigger now and he can't keep track of everyone in it. The show has always been from Steven's perspective and the Future specifically is ABOUT the fact that people have their own lives and dreams and goals that have nothing to do with you. Like... Sadie has a new love interest. We barely learn anything about them and then they're gone. That's what happens as your life changes and people drift out of it. That's the point.

Are you keeping precise track of the lives of every single person you're friends with? Do you know what all of them are doing at any given point? Can you explain their narrative function in your life?

I fucking hope not. That sounds both creepy and exhausting.

It's not like the Cartoon Network execs stormed Becky's office and said "PERIDOT CAN ONLY TALK AND SHOW UP IN SO MANY EPISODES" or "NO OTHER ESTABLISHED CHARACTER CAN SHOW UP IN LAPIS AND PERIDOT'S EPISODE." So they have fewer episodes and a lower than average budget. It's not like they're spending that budget on animation, nor are their usual voice actors particularly pricey. I understand that maybe they couldn't afford to get one in the booth to record another session, but that's only reason more to plan shit out ahead of time so you get the most out of the sessions you can afford.
As it is though the format isn't what's preventing Amethyst from showing up in In Dreams, or Garnet in Why So Blue. Fucks sake they got Pearl in on Casual Bismuth (and to your point of quality over quantity that ironically wasn't a particularly great episode for Bismuth) so it's not like the format was super restrictive on that front. And they let Peridot have a speaking cameo in Bluebird, so I find it hard to believe the format is the reason that couldn't have happened more and with other characters. The "they did the best with what they had" argument only really works when we actually know what they had, so as far as I stand they aren't doing the best with what they have and could be juggling their characters better.
