At first I thought I just stopped seeing it, but upon going back and rewatching the first episode it is NOTICEABLY choppier than the later ones. I think it smooths out around episode 2 or 3.
Some more contemporary game stuff is coming. You're not going to get Call of Duty or even Fortnite because that's just realistic guns. But it has a character who's a reference to BT from Titanfall 2, and a whole team of Overwatch expies. I think they just lean on the retro early because it's more recognizably iconic as "video game". It's more like everything is happening at once. They talk about their expy of Castlevania Symphony of the Night like it's brand new, but do the same thing for actually new games styles.
And personally, I find Miko to be less self centered and annoying than, say, Mabel. I agree she's a well worn character trope but at least she's not an excessively egregious example of it.
