Why did Asterix never catch on in the States anyway? My parents used to bring me the comics from business trips to Europe and I fucking loved them, was it just that the American market was already too saturated to penetrate?

He was slowly taking power from the senate and taxing the rich heavily to help fund public works projects like fountains and bathhouses along with granting citizenship to a lot of the farther out provinces of the republic. There's also the fact that the dude marched an army into Rome and declared he was in charge from now on.

They were basically afraid of him becoming a king, which in the Roman Republic was a really dirty word (the Roman original Roman monarchy was really not looked kindly upon). Ironically in killing him, they sealed the fate of the Republic, as in the political chaos pretty much all of his assailants died and Augustus Caesar was able to rise to power.
