cinema and theater always had this predilection for the duality of the Pagliacci, comedy and tragedy. you can have a movie about a woman being depressed and that will go unoticed like water under a bridge, but a clown being depressed and suffering will always attract certain kind of people who see this as the epitome of art.

Just a reminder still, that both Joker and Black Panther are the most succesful post 2008 comic-book movies regarding Oscars, so like it or not, people know both are legit good.

He’s caught in the post Hayes Code and Comics Code Authority trend of bad guys being fleshed out more than any other villain. For the longest time bad guys can’t be sympathetic less publishers risk paying fines and dealing with businesses not working with them, since these things are dead people have the freedom to do whatever they want in regards to villains. Since the Joker is more of a wild-card 15 year old idea of an anarchist he’s almost a perfect blank slate to plaster some philosophy over. But since Hollywood is still ran by the pedophile reptilians in control of everything the philosophies can only be as edgy as to not actually get the population thinking about the fact that we’d be better off not controlled by pedophile reptiles.

Not to mention the Joker is an easy character to fuck up so you’d have to be good to not fuck him up.

Joker, unlike most of Batman's rogues, was dark and edgy when he was created, and was only goofy for like 2 decades before the 70s and 80s cemented him as a mature character again.
You'll never see something like this happen for, say, Riddler because he was inherently silly when he was created.

Joker is a preset template of a character: "Evil clown" just add quirky actor to carry the movie, that's why Leto got so much focus for being a weirdo on set, only to see it blow up in their faces.
also the batman movies are always about the villains. Bats is just there to react to them.

I liked the movie when I watched it but the more I think back to it, it just feels like an unintentional parody of Scorsese starring the Joker. It's all so over-the-top and the comic book elements add exactly nothing except brand recognition. Still a good performance by Phoenix, with what he was given to work with
