Honestly, it's a great idea. Dating sims are kinda played out, so adding another gameplay mechanic really gives it a shot in the arm, and using different colours to represent certain personality traits that come up in conversation is a smart idea. However, the potential is never fully realised and the shortcomings show up around the mid-game mark. The difficulty curve shoots up a little too much for the dates and the various items/abilities never really work that well. Then there's the writing...
What you have to bear in mind is that Huniepop has pick-up artistry flowing through its veins. That means that the women all fall into very specific types and the only way to get anywhere with them is to be kind of a manipulative sleaze... even for a dating sim. Shove gifts in their face (even when one of them specifically says she doesn't want you to, but she does really because WOMEN AMIRITE FELLAS) and mirror their personality to a creepy degree, and they'll reward you with sex!
Also, the "ending" is complete shit. All you get is a "well done for banging this really boring character, now here's an extra mode to play in!" which is BORING. Give me consequences for banging all these women without them finding out! Give me a girl to choose! Hell, give me several women to choose! Give me the chance to delve into their backstories! Give me SOMETHING!
I hope the sequel fixes this (they do seem to actually have a plot this time round) but I'm not holding my breath.
