>>112922753Sure, but how many Garfield fans are out there compared to fans of Calvin & Hobbes or Peanuts? Garfield's ratio of fans to public exposure is out of whack. There are a lot of people that are familiar with the franchise, but few who like it or respect it. So a lot of people interact with Garfield, but they have no love for the characters so they approach it with irony or contempt.
I think it's similar to Shrek and all the weird Shrek memes. Everyone knows Shrek, but I doubt anyone has the emotional connection with Shrek that they do with Buzz Lightyear or Sully. Thus, we see fan animations about Shrek raping a young fan, but we don't see equivalent for beloved Pixar characters. And we see weird comics about Garfield going insane and trying to murder Jon and Odie, but we don't see that for Calvin & Hobbes.
