The man is explicitly trying to make a home, complete with a wife, child, and dog. However, what he truly wants is the artificial idea of a home, something that's specifically for him. Acquiring these things like house-hold appliances is a direct metaphor for ineffectually treating their "real" counterparts like objects. What the man actually wants are tools no more complex than a toaster.
The man does not care about his family, he only cares about what his family can do for him. This motivation is supported by the family being machines, with the man even configuring / controlling his wife in one panel.
In this case, the man is a selfish person who wants the love people provide without any of their agency, with them only doing what he wants.

He's a sad sack who has more money than charisma and just wants what modern technology can give him, even if it's artificial.
