Fire benders would be at a significant disadvantage. Air, water, and earth are all extremely accessible elements. Fire is not.
If all you have to do to defeat a firebender would be to knock out a torch, there wouldn't even be a point in having them. They'd automatically be the weakest.

Fire benders were bullshit because fire is fundamentally just visible energy being released by combustible materials. You'd be more accurate to call them heat benders, and the show would be more accurate to have them shooting beams of invisible heat at each other, but that wouldn't be as exciting as gouts of flame.

The show would have been better if only a handful of people could /create/ fire and that most "firebenders" are employed in forges making weapons because the fire nation destroying the dragons/sun people/airbenders caused them to become spiritually bankrupt and unable to properly control their element.

Also there should have been "air peasants" that didn't bend but lived in the foothills around the temples who welcome the return of the avatar as a savior. The 100% genocide of all air people was retarded.

Also there should have been an airbending who was a sky pirate on a flying ship with a Jet-like hatred of the fire niggers plotting to suicide bomb the fire capital and take all of them out as revenge for the Air shoah, similar to those jews that tried to poison german food supplies after the war to murder 6 million germans in a counter-holocaust.

I guess that last one sounds like edgy fanfiction but I like the idea of Aang saving people who have "lost their way". Talk-fu is lame in most works but in avatar a cycle of war and revenge and the Avatar being the force that ends it is interesting, the airbenders being potentially the most dangerous benders never comes up until korra s3 with air suffocation and levitation and the airbenders exist mostly as this over-idealized version of tibetan monks. Like you're telling me fire guys were totally okay with just physically going in there and holocausting the airbenders? I feel like if you're going to make Airbenders into Tibetans you should mention in the lore that the "Air Empire" used to be wind-mongols that conquered the fuck out of people on the ground, so the fire nation justifies the genocide that way. Before Tibet was some hippydippy buddhist memeland it was an Empire that rivaled China and Arabia. It might even go a ways towards explaining why no one gave a fuck the fire nation murdered all the airbenders.

I think it's a decent compromise because figuring out ways to make an action scene where Firebenders can do firebending would've been a nightmare. Plus, you can finagle explanation that they can channel fire inside them. Plus it can add layer to the idea of why firebenders thought fire supremacy is real, they are a little different than all other benders.

The real explanation for this is that if firebenders had to rely on already-existing fire then they wouldn't have been as entertaining or exciting to watch onscreen. And it would have easily led to Comic Book Guy levels of nitpicking, people saying, "Why don't they just put all the fires out before the firebenders show up?", and so on. Fire isn't omnipresent in the environment like air, water, and earth are. You need to be able to conjure up fire out of thin air because otherwise the firebenders are basically useless in a fight.

Shyamalan's terrible movie did exactly what the OP is talking about and it was fucking awful, the firebenders were nerfed to hell and back and they were not intimidating at all.

That's why the fire nation had to attack all the temples at once, they knew what they were dealing with and needed to blitzkrieg them. The idea of ALL airbenders being wiped out is stupid, and that's why people theorized airbenders fleeing their homes and living among the different nations while not using their bending.

It's also a precursor to the theory that Ty Lee has airbender ancestry, which would explain why she's flexible, fast, aerodynamic, and looks like Aang.

What I never understood is why can't more waterbenders just rip water out of the air? Why does Katara bother carrying around a sack of water like some kind of discount Gaara, limiting her to basically using it as a whip and nothing else? There's water all around her 24/7, it should be the easiest thing in the world but the show treats it like some super technique that only that crazy old bloodbending lady could do. I get that it's magic and the powers can't be taken to their logical conclusions because it's a kid's show (waterbenders should be able to cause instant heart attacks, airbenders crushing lungs, firebenders incinerating people like Roy Mustang from FMA), but it seems like they just nerfed the shit out of water.

Talking only about TLA btw, I haven't watched Korra so if waterbenders get a boost in that series then great

In actuality it was probably because no one could touch them other than maybe powerful earthbenders due to the temples being so high up. They never thought Firebenders would straight up become jet packs.

It's just really inconsistent. Zuko takes a fireball to the face and naturally has a disfiguring scar, everyone else gets blasted with fire left and right and they seem to be mostly ok.

I think it's that fire lends itself naturally to overexerting yourself and getting tired fast, we see that with Zhao and Zuko chimping out over and over again in season 1 were they just yell alot and blast as much fire as they can as fast as they can. It's the rare ones like Iroh and Azula who can stay calm and controlled 24/7, which is also why they can use lightning.

In TLA we see the specialties each bending gets and can only be done by prodigy benders.

Waterbenders can bend blood, grab water from the air and plant life, and use it for healing methods. Katara stopped RAIN in one episode.

Airbenders can fly and protect themselves from falling to death like Aang, and if strong enough, can create tornados and hurricanes and whatnot.

Earthbenders can bend metal if they're good enough like Toph

Firebenders can bend lightning (Zuko and his family) and if they practice hard enough, combust anything on impact (like sparky sparky boom boom man)

But now in Korra, firebenders can casually bend lightning like it's no problem, while the waterbenders who bend blood are shown to be prodigies still. More people can bend metal, but it's nowhere near what Toph handled when she was 10-12. A plus in Korra is that we see lavabending.

She made grounded walls of ice and traps. She needs to exert so motion to fling the ice and after she flings it she has no control over it akin to her water whip training. An average bender can slosh you with a spray of water. An master with his motions can control it. Ming is an example of it. They can do this in a sense that they can hold it, but they have to keep bending or else it'll spill. Of course earthbenders can pull this off without moving their arms everywhere, they aren't bending liquid; a substance that's constantly moving around.

I don't think lightningbending in TLA was ever described as a prodigal ability. Azula WAS a prodigal firebender and combined with her straight up sociopathy was able to lightning bend by being cold an emotionless, but Iroh described lightningbending as basically being cool, collected fire bending with movements similar to waterbending. I'm sure in a world where you aren't a firenation conscript sent to police the colonies and can openly communicate and interact with waterbenders its pretty easy to pick up lightningbending as an average firebender

How about we go half Shamanalam's route — firebenders can only create fire out of nothing when the sun's out, otherwise they need a lantern, just like Katara and her water pouch.

Just creating fire ex nihilo is kind of bullshit, even with magic. In LotR Gandalf tells the fellowship on Caradhras that he cannot create fire with nothing to burn.

Maybe the reason why only Kyoshi was strong enough to detach a piece of a continent is because she's the freaking Avatar. Maybe the reason why earthbenders couldn't use rocks to lift themselves if because 1) we didn't see it in the show 2) navigating through the air isn't earthbending style or 3) no one happens to be THAT good. The argument was if earthebenders could levitate large pieces of rock, and look, it's proven so quit throwing a tantrum.

He does bend with motion. He bends by moving his FACE. That's something you have to be pretty fucking skilled to do, but it did require motion. Bending ALWAYS requires bodily motion, psychic or motionless bending is not possible. The exceptions are

Are people still arguing over where the fire comes from? I already mentioned that it's explained that all benders have an "energy" within themselves that they can either use to connect with the "energy" in the air, earth, or water, or project it out of themselves in the form of fire. Fire has this "magical energy" too, which is why fire benders can navigate already existing fire.

You can't be all, 'well hmm if Sandbenders bend sand which is mostly silicon then shouldn't they be able to bend anything with silicon in it?' No not necessarily, because that doesn't fit 'Earth' conceptually/spiritually.

Fire is just rapid oxidation. A chemical reaction. That's not actually what Firebenders bend, they bend their Qi "life energy" and again as above it's really a conceptual thing. It's not science and never has been.
