The weird part is that they're casting a shadow onto the bar counter too so there's shadows in both directions.

I'd have to assume they didn't want the shadows covering their faces when facing Moe so they went with that awkward approach instead of just fixing the scene.

It's so that it reads better. Otherwise Homer's face would be in shadow. You can see on Moe and the guy in the middle that it's the proper way because they're facing to the left. The shadows aren't to create realism, they're just to make the image easier to look at.

While this is the right answer, I just wish the shadows weren't in at all...it just is a level of detail the simpsons never called for. Like it made sense when the movie came out but when they started making it look like the movie all the time it just is oddly too polished looking to try and mask how shit everything else is

Zombie Simpsons has a really lazy aesthetic and animation. Honestly even if the show suddenly started pumping out amazing scripts and all the voice actors remembered how their characters are supposed to sound, the visuals would fuck it all up.

OP is only correct if it's a harsh light and not a diffused light, which it would be with that kind of glass frame. If you have light coming from two directions, there will still be a slight shadow on the lesser side relative to the stronger side.
