Google wants you to spend a lot of time seeing advertisements on Youtube, so the Russians engineered a lot of highly audacious, engaging, political flim-flammery for Google to run ads on. They did the same on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr - everywhere. It was just exploiting a weakness of the online business model.
4chan got hit too, but that was exploiting moot's weak hand when it came to moderating things that mattered. The Russians would NEVER get a MLP image past moot, but inflammatory, anti-establishment rhetoric? Whoo, baby, is 4chan vulnerable to that.
