Okay, here's what I've slapped together without grabbing Twitter outrage-farm screencaps. I base this on the experience I have had and others in the same boat.
Gabby is Nuyorican. Don't let anyone tell you different; we're pretty much hated by everyone, even our own. Nobody wants to be one, nobody would usually admit to it. Not latine enough for our own family, not ethnic enough for other minorities, too ethnic for whites. Most try to double-down and overcompensate on being latine and you can usually tell by how many ethnic-flags they have on, or other merchandise and advertisements for their particular ethnicity. How much badly-mangled spanglish is thrown around, how much reggaeton and merengue music is blaring out of a barely-serviceable car. We want acceptance from whites as well, so some latch on to the whole white-woke mentality. Gabby says she is a bruja. I've done the research into pre-colonization religion and spirituality of the islands. Believe me, she has no idea of what being a bruja actually is. Others keep telling her bad advice, wrong info and she wants to belong so badly she'll buy any of it as long as she gets attention, even if it's bad attention. She's very unhappy with herself and isn't sure if it's her own fault or someone else's.
