>>112579249>Lars and Sadie was basically that, but they had been a difficult couple for a long time even before growing in different directionsSteven and Connie have been growing apart too. They're living different lives, have different goals, working on different things, and they've only reunited once in 4 years. Connie's education is eventually going to take her out of state. It would be unsatisfying after the emphasis on change and growing up, if Steven's future was just be Connie's aimless boyfriend.
It wouldn't be a good message to make Connie a bench warmer or Steven's therapist. She made a move in the movie, but Steven still didnt reciprocate. Its possible that Connie's crush on Steven simply faded after so long. (A good lesson to not sit around and expect romance to find YOU) And Steven is nowhere mentally fit to start a romance. It wouldnt be fair to her if he just dumped his problems on her when Connie has her own life to worry about.
>but how many of those have you shared an intergalactic conflict, or a consciousness with?Sugar said that SU was heavily inspired by fairytales. SUF is Steven and Connie growing up and leaving those happily ever after fairy tales behind. Traveling with Steven as kids in a magical fantasy alien world inspired her to become a "real" astronaut or scientist. Sure Steven could just port her around space, but she wouldn't be studying if she wanted someone else to hand her her dream.
Steven and Connie are just on too different paths, and will probably end up as just good friends. Which is better off than Lars and Sadie who are barely friends and never said goodbye before he left. That's pretty sad since Steven and Connie insisted that they were best friends.
