Regarding it by state, you'll find that the most violent cities in the US for gun crime are all over 40% black regardless of state legislation, and the most lax gun law states that have no major black populations are safer than state with a high minority population and strict gun laws.
In fact, if you adjust for gun murders per 100k inhabitants, stricter gun law states actually perform worse (being more dangerous) than more lax gun law states. California comes in the bottom third, while DC (which has some of the strictest gun law in the US) ranks as the single deadliest "state" in the US for gun murder despite it, while Vermont (which only really started trying to do much with regulation in 2019) is the safest.
