It did go somewhere, it led into the Maul storyline of Season 3.
It was never a "dark side turn" he just was tempted by it. If anything, it was the conclusion of his Dark Side stuff.
In Season 1 he has his first experience with the dark side when he taps into it with the Fyrnock Queen.
Then Season 2 has him being a little rougher around the edges culminating in his experience with Maul on Malachor and him getting the holocron.
Then there's a timeskip where he's being tempted by the holocron and is starting to change because of it. Kanan helps bring him back into the light and Ezra learns from the experience, but still lets himself get tangled up with Maul.
