>>112261462People have said it before that one of the main problems with Rey is that she kinda just absorbs the skills of the other members of the party, making them useless and leaving them with nothing to do, but I think the issue is also that Rey's character itself is miscast as the main character.
Rey is a pragmatic scrap gatherer from a near post apocalyptic society who's had to fight for every benefit she's ever gotten. She's not this beacon of hope and optimism, nor is she a symbol of change in the wider world. In fact, her backstory is that she explicitly fights change, preferring to wait for her parents to come back instead of searching for them. She's not the Luke of the party. She's the Han Solo. She's the character who steps forward and goes 'I'm in this for me, I'm not risking my life over a stupid war.' In short, she's not the kind of character to be influenced or moved by the evil of the Empire. Sorry, 'First Order.'
You know who is though? Finn. Finn, the guy who witnessed the evil of the Empire first hand, and was so disgusted and angry at it that he defected to the other side. The guy who lost everything to the Empire, from his family, to his childhood, to his life. The guy willing to sacrifice all he has to left to ensure the rebels fight another day, multiple times. Why not make that guy the Jedi? He seems the much better fit for it. Have him be mentored by Luke, and gain the power to actually fight against the evils he finds.
Poe can be Leia of the group. A fine leader to direct the other two, if a bit impulsive.
TL;DR: Rey should have been the new Han Solo. Finn should have been the new Luke and main character.
