>>112232492This is probably just me, but I always saw Darth Vader's decrepit state as a result of the Force taking over his corporeal form (much like Darth Sion and Darth Nihilus) more than simply being a victim of dismemberment by an external agent.
He's not really a cyborg, but a dying man with a broken body put on a life support system who has aged too soon and too badly since he never took care of his power.
General Grievous is kind of a similar deal, but I believe he leaves a lot more room for commentary in relation to his status as the "tragic cyborg" in comparisson Vader, not only because his design is a lot more explicit in that aspect, but also because of his role as the link between the Separatist Council and the Droid Army, as well as other tidbits from his backstory, like his inability to use the Force or how his people viewed carnal life.
Both could be great characters in the prequels, but as you well said none of this comes into play in the end.
