And before you say "what does Reddit have to do with this", consider that we're talking about casual moviegoers, and those two places are casualfag central.
Again: the entry barrier into comics is steep because of years of nerdom basically making it more and more entrenched. Someone casual might grab a trade or two, but rarely they're going to invest themselves in the new stuff because there's too much of it and it's not easy to follow. It takes time, and you pretending it's not because "durr baby books" just shows you're not having an honest discussion about this, you just want to shitpost about sjws.
