Here is the thing, the characterizations in this are absolutely terrible.
Everything else is pretty solid. The pacing is good, the mystery is good, the chemistry between the cast is good.
The art is great.

If these were all original characters, it would have been a solid story, but it's using big name DC characters, and doing incredible damage to them, making it best considered non-canon.

I liked the art, I like the pacing, I liked most of the dialog. It's not even close to being his worst. Like, his worst will always be remembered how he messed up the bat-wedding.

Toss in the fact that they had to rebrand two tie-in issues as part of the main mini-series due to collapsing sales and the rumors of rewrites (to basically make the murders an accident and not Wally killing them on purpose), only cemented it as a colossal failure. Especially since they unpersoned Wally immediately afterwords outside of a one-off cameo in Doomsday Clock designed to explain why Manhattan explicitly went after Wally and erased him.

Speaking of, I hate that HiC even has a whodunnit plot in the first place. Could've and should've just been the heroes literally having therapy sessions, because addressing the fact that being a superhero will fuck you up mentally is a great idea for a story.

I'm not a big DC guy - I mostly read Marvel and Image stuff - but I feel like I mostly have a handle on the big events and developments in DC comics at any given point. One thing in this story which utterly baffled me and I've never really seen anyone explain, and which remains this irritation for me:

As far as I know, in the post-Flashpoint timeline, Ted Cord had been introduced, in the pages of Forever Evil, right? Had he ever subsequently been seen adventuring under the name Blue Beetle? Had he, during those adventures, ever been shown to have developed any sort of relationship with this new timeline's version of Booster Gold?

It seems just as possible to me that the answer to both questions is "No, and King didn't care," but if I'm wrong I'd like to know that I'm wrong.

I think Diana is pretty fucked up, and the point is that Dina can't even face her problems so she just runs from them. Donna doesn't even know if she's real. And you forgot Soltice who was so mess up that she couldn't even control her powers (I think it was supposed to mirror Wally like every other hero he killed: Lagoon Boy being unable to cope with fear, Hotspot trying to retire, etc)
You could make the same decompression take with everyone to be honest, most of the confession are barely skin deep takes on this characters.

Identity Crisis is still the worse Crisis to be ever released because regardless of its quality as a media, it reintroduced the whole unnecessary dark crossover to DC, specially Didio, as a easy way to gather readers and flashy headlines. Heroes in Crisis is just another page in the dark book that Identity Crisis began for DC.
It's like the new status quo for DC. Every goodness and meaningful tie they introduce between them is just a new link for them to exploit and grind into sales money. It's never going to stop because faggots can't stop buying it.

It's worse. Due to what was CLEARLY pushback from fans, they made it an accident and it was actually the speedforce going out of control that killed everyone. Did we read the same book? The pacing was way too slow. They needed several issues to leave the front porch for goodness sake. The mystery was bad too. A good mystery gives you clues to guess who the killer is and manages to put a twist to the solution that makes you feel good about being able to guess the solution if you're clever, but is still suprising enough to excite you.
King wasted several issues on "clues" that turned out to be fake and didn't matter only to dump a convoluted explanation on us in the last two issues. All the other plots didn't matter. Pretty similar to his Batman run now that I'm thinking about it.
A lot of slow moving plot in the middle that turns out to be pointless and a rushed and convoluted disappointing conclusion.

The only good thing about it was the art and even that was tasteless in some cases. Trauma and Mann drawing every character like sex dolls doesn't mix that well.

DC Rebirth included massive silent retcons. When Pre-Flashpoint Superman came back, writers across tons of books started acknowledging Post-Crisis events and relationships without explanation as if Superman had brought a wave of reality changes with him and no one wanted to acknowledge it openly.

God, yall have short memory. Final Crisis was fucking incomprehensible, and had like three different storylines, none of which were explained, and all of them contradicted Countdown to Final Crisis.

Heroes in Crisis is just a mediocre story, but you can mostly understand what's going on.
