Too competent to be utterly terrible but too meandering and indecisive to actually be good. It feels like the first draft of something that was rushed out into production without months of polish.
A comatose Benicio Del Toro points out war profiteering is a thing and how both sides are basically the same to normal people, which doesn't really make sense when one side is worshipping evil space wizards and blowing up entire planets and devastating the intergalactic economy after they've been out of power for thirty years. Finn does nothing of note except kill Boba Fett 2.0 in a scene that feels like it was just cut out of his character arc from TFA.
The entire Resistance fleet has seemingly no other tactic than kamikaze runs, it felt more like fucking Gundam than Star Wars with that shit. Poe becomes a giant retard for no raisin, for some reason the filmmakers really make you want to hate Laura Dern, which is one hell of a feat but her awful character nearly manages it. Rose barely does anything beyond force Finn into helping out instead of running off after Rey, where he could have had some actual rapport.
There's like three different endings one after the other and they all get progressively worse, like the shittiest version of Return of the King you could imagine. Rey and Kylo Renn look like they're going somewhere new and interesting only to immediately throw it away so he can be evil for some dumb reason. I love the idea of Rey being some total nobody sold by her drunk parents, it almost gives her something resembling a flaw but the new film just jettisoned that. Some people hate bitter old Luke, I didn't mind it but the film definitely could have done it a lot better. There's like an hour wasted on some shitty casino planet and the filmmakers pointing out alien horse racing is bad and cruel to animals.
