Superman, on the other hand, is the ultimate shield. Nothing can get through it and nothing ever will. It's an indestructible piece of metal that's versatile and will defend the people behind it no matter what. Logic be damned, because its purpose is to protect whoever wields the shield and its going to do that.
If you put a self-improving spear against a shield that cannot be penetrated at all, the spear would either break from the strain of its limits placed on it, or it could keep going, but never get to the level of that shield. Purely because that shield is designed to protect the people using ot not matter what happens, if it gets broken, the shield fails its mission as a shield. And it can't allow itself to be weaker than any other shield out of risk of not being strong enough to protect. So what does it do? It just becomes indestructible. Because that's the only way it can protect whoever is behind the shield.
