Since there's rumors that Warner is eyeing J.J. Abrams to reboot Superman, I thought it'd be interesting to remember SUPERMAN: FLYBY, which was in development around 2002/2004 and was written and at one point almost directed by Abrams.
>Jor-El is the tyrannical king of Krypton and his wife Lara is the leader of the Resistance against him.
>Kal-El is the chosen one prophesized to deliver his people from Jor-El’s tyranny.
>Lara sends Kal-El to Earth to be raised by the Kents, whom she has personally chosen as Kal-El’s surrogate parents.
>A probe sent by Jor-El crash-lands nearby and is found by dim-witted travelling salesman Lex Luthor.
>Contact with Kryptonian technology gives Luthor superhuman intelligence, and he reverse-engineers it to create LexCorp.
>Clark grows up in Smallville and learns about his alien birthright from his parents.
>Clark meets and falls in love with Lois Lane in college, and they both become reporters for the Daily Planet in Metropolis. Lois has been trying to expose Luthor.
>Clark uses a Kryptonian suit found in his ship to save Air Force One after Luthor sabotages it and is nicknamed "Superman" by Lois.
>Luthor contacts Jor-El, who sends his son Ty-Zor to Earth to kill Superman, in exchange for more power.
>Luthor and Ty-Zor kidnap Lois to lure Superman into a trap and kill him with Kryptonite.
>Superman survives, defeats Ty-Zor in a massive battle and exposes Luthor's crimes.
>Superman leaves for Krypton to confront Jor-El, while Luthor is arrested and vows revenge on Superman.
