But there is a theme of family sins. Rapunzel's dad sets the Moonstone and Rapunzel (as the sundrop) on an accelerated collision course when he uprooted the flower, Eugene's entire family line focused on hiding the Moonstone rather than trying to find a possible solution (which carries over to Quirin's own secret keeping just pushing Varian to poke at things more), Gothel fucks up all kinds of shit. So on and so forth. The misdeeds and bad choices of the past generations falling on the present is pretty deeply rooted in the show
