So I just got done with season 1, and while I liked it, there were several things I feel like could have been improved
Firstly, I feel like having a narrower character focus would have helped. First, cut out Ezran. He offers little to nothing that could not be accomplished in other ways and is occasionally an active detriment to my enjoyment of the show. Second, I feel like the relationship between Callum and Rayla progressed far too quickly. They needed to be more openly hostile and antagonistic to each other at first and for a longer amount of time, since while they are working towards a common goal, they really aren't allies in any sense. The end of season 1 really feels like it would have been a better place for them to start coming around towards getting along. Third, it feels like a missed opportunity that they didn't explore Callum's budding interest in magecraft more. He said in the beginning that it was the only thing he'd ever been naturally gifted at, so lean into that harder and more often to show him really getting into it, which would make his sacrifice to hatch the egg more impactful.
And finally, and this is the most important criticism I have, they need to stop the attempt at humor during what would otherwise be tense situations. Joss Whedon poisoned a whole generation of writers and it needs to stop before metastasizing any further. Let there be stakes, let there be tension, and let there be real, genuine danger without working to undermine yourself immediately after it is introduced. I have a couple other minor quibbles, but those are the main things I came away with. I'll probably see this through to the end because Rayla is too damn cute, but I hope they managed to address some of this in the later seasons.
I don't know what I wanted to get out of posting this rant, but I feel better for putting it out there.
