Make content continuously no matter what the quality is, and either pander to a specific group or groups or make every character and problem so generic, bland and inoffensive that everybody can relate to it.

pic related lists the top 20 comic creators by patrons. Rank number 100 has 339 patrons and they each donate $3 on average (a few much more) that nets a mere 1000 per month, barely enough to live on.

Can confirm, pandering is the easiest approach. You usually need moneydollars to keep yourself motivated on a webcomic and/or to promote it elsewhere, and the easiest way to get money is to pander like crazy.

Some of these comics I like, but a lot of them are deeply formulaic.

Schlock Mercenary is goddamn repetitive, oh hey, the Mercenaries were on a mission, that turned out to have complications they were unaware of, and resulted in a violent climax?

Or Sophie "I totally jack off to the thought of myself as a 8 year old girl" LeBlanc's endlessly variations on the same basic idea.

It's not enough to pander. It's about targeting the right audience too.

Whomp makes less than 600$ a month because its humor appeals to fat nerds with social anxiety and depression, and those people aren't going to want to support someone else because their own life is such a mess.
