I never cared about the shipping and i always liked the show, but man does this leave a really bad aftertaste in the mouth.
As someone said above, he was just pushed to be the "bad guy' becauae reasons but when you take into account his episode and characterization before he got derailed, things give a very, VERY bad message.
Rhombulus was shown to ne only good at tactics and basically being a cop which made him feel his family just thought of him as a burden and just dumb muscle. He was well aware of this and knew he wasn't that bright yet still wanted the respect and love of his family and thought that if he did his job even better then he would be respected, He went and cristalyzed a princess because he thought that would fix his estranded relationship and panicked when he saw he messed up but he didn't knew why or where he messed up until he stopped and had a small talk with somwone who saw him as an equal, The poor guy was even beating himself up and crying for god's sake. During later episodes after he lost contact with star he was basically left on square one again, he sid have some problems with how things were and his morality making him reconsider a lot, he was the one who confessed to yhe Meteora thing anf him admitting he didn't liked being guilty so he at least should say the truth while the others didn't felt like saying anything to still appear as the good guys, hell, Heckapoo was chastising him for saying the truth. Then, later on the seasons after he started to lose even more he was basically panicking and with no one to help him stop and think he was left again alone to worry and chase after approval of anyone up to the point he thought that going to extremes would earn him a smidge of respect.
