>>111917788>I'd rather have Alan Moore's ending for Superman, where he used a golden kryptonite to give up his powers and live a very normal, very human life together with Lois and his kid.I hate that ending. I get you types of guys prefer the “human” aspect of Clark Kent more, but I think that ending is incredibly disrespectful regarding the legacy of Superman up until that point. A legacy Alan Moore always went on record saying that he grew up with and cherished.
The ending is disrespectful because what it does is go out of its way to embrace complacency of his own weakness. Clark takes away his own powers out of shame. Clark abandons who he is after one mistake, and throws the towel to do what he secretly wanted to do, settle down, rather than what his sense of right and wrong dictates.
I get it. Maggin has Superboy make a vow to himself that, should he ever be responsible for the death a living being then he’d stop being Superman. I understand. His code of honor would not let him keep his powers after breaking that vow.
But it’s honestly pitiful. Giving up his powers, his greater ability to help people by the millions, after facing an ounce of guilt and failure? Conforming to a simple and normal life after continuously proving to yourself and to others that you can go beyond what you can do and build a better tomorrow?
The Dark Knight Returns didn’t treat Superman that well. Some even say that it helped ruin Superman’s image much more than any shitty movie ever did.
I’m not gonna contradict them, but I am gonna say that Alan Moore stood right besides Miller and basically helped him in that task. Moore made Superman’s peak go out with a whimper.
