In Batman's case, it is and always has been INCREDIBLY retarded, because just going by what any random schmuck in Gotham can see with their own eyes, Batman is a guy with considerable resources, and is capable of storing his gadgets in several secure locations, and self-identifies with bats, who happen to live in caves. There's only one man in Gotham who both owns enough of the city to make that possible, *and* owns a mansion on top of a well-documented cave system. It's a pretty good bet that that guy at least knows *something*.
