>The film’s opening scene further documents how Harley Quinn is trying to get on with her life after breaking up with Joker following 2016’s Suicide Squad. “We must start from the beginning. Behind a man of success is a f****** woman!,” Margot Robbie’s protagonist says as the Warner Bros. and DC logos roll.
>Harley’s in her small and dirty apartment -- there’s food on the floor and everything is messy -- cutting her hair, explaining that she is trying to change her identity. She talks a lot about her breakup with Joker, although the character previously played by Jared Leto does not appear.
>Harley says she needs “a new love” so goes to an exotic pet shop where she acquires her iconic hyena. The salesman flirts with her, but the scene suddenly ends and we see Harley back in her apartment with the hyena. If you’re wondering what happened to the salesman, you can see his foot being eaten by the animal. Harley says “this was a favor exchange."
>Out on the Gotham streets, Harley Quinn says to herself that she is “a new Harley Quinn,” even though the women of the city are gossiping that she did not get over Joker yet because she still wears the “J” necklace. When she hears that, she decides to get rid of everything from her past relationship with the villain. She walks until she sees the Ace Chemicals compound where Joker transformed her into Harley Quinn (as depicted in Suicide Squad). A drunk Harley steals a truck while its driver isn’t looking. Now speeding towards Ace Chemicals, she rips off her “J” necklace and says: “Joker, you motherf****!”.
>Harley jumps out of the truck, which then hits the compound and explodes. The explosion looks like New Years fireworks, with a lot of lights and colors. For Harley, this was the moment where she gets her independence from Joker. “But I’m not the only one looking for emancipation…”.
