>>111695412they key to Carol Danvers is not that she is a good but flawed person. It is that she is a really bad person, didn't realize it until she already had powers, and has resolved to overcome it through sheer force of will.
She's a bloodthirsty borderline sociopath, an alcoholic, has severe anger issues, and is a closeted lesbian on top of everything else. Look at how she's been written. She often smiles while fighting, or when looking forward to fighting. She has said, "if I have to be the bad guy to save some lives? I can live with that." She used to state her readiness to kill often -- it was because she wanted to and was looking for an excuse. She's very rules-oriented and authoritarian because following the rules keeps her on track. Rules tell her when she's being moral. She needs that because she can't tell. What's her default reaction to most things? Attack it. Her default emotion? Rage.
She's very dark, very dangerous, and very sad. It's no wonder marvel has botched her characterization in the past. It's difficult to write someone this powerful with this many issues without them leaving a trail of destruction, and it makes her pretty frightening. Someone with superman-level strength and possible immortality who lacks a moral compass and enjoys killing. The only thing keeping her a "hero" is her conscious choice to be one. If she changed her mind she'd go very dark very quickly.
