The dragon deserved to die. It's an intelligent creature. If it wasn't planning on killing them (it was) then it was committing terrorism on an already exiled and disarmed race.
That it would buzz everyday in their territory and pretend that they'd never try and strike at it to relieve the threat is ridiculous and shows you're either an apologist or a brainlet. It was goading them with terrorism into an attack to 'justify' its warcrimes.
It should be executed on 3 seperate counts. If the Dragons aren't fucking scumbags the crew will encounter it again in the dragon lands and it will either be imprisoned, grievously harmed and crippled i.e no wings, or killed outright. Anything else is a superficial concession and shows that the Dragons support his actions.

The show is uncannily good at producing complex scenarios with morally grey tendencies and then having the WORST possible black and white """solution""" be presented as the right one.
