One suggestion was that Krypton banned inter-planetary travel due to a catastrophic failure of an experiment that destroyed one of their moons.
Another more recent one was that eons ago, Kryptonians were horrible tyrants and essentially took over and colonized the entire universe with their yellow sun powers. I think they were trying to infer that every humanoid species was a descendant of Kryptonians.
