Yeah it pretty much matches up with what I grew up around.
I lived in a suburb that was two combined towns of about 70,000 total people. We had a small ghetto on the east side where all the black people were and we had a surprising number of Asians thanks in part to a rich couple that adopted 26 Chinese kids. That's not an exaggeration.
In a way it was a lot like a safe cartoon depiction of a "big" city. Just scaled down. Not much crime, everyone mostly kept to themselves. We knew gays existed but we didn't have much of an opinion on the matter at the time.
Gay marriage was legalized without much opposition, then the red half completely flipped their shit and managed to hold a special election to oust the judges that did it. Iowa's only really a red state because the blue half doesn't care enough to vote. It would be considered a battleground state if it had enough electoral votes for anyone to give a shit.
