>>110973575It's hard to tell, but I'm going to lean toward "no." I think putting the Fantastic Four into a weirdly cold science aesthetic could be a good idea, but you can also argue that's not really the F4. That transformation scene was a glimmer of his vision, and it a cool thing to see. Could you make a whole movie around this idea? Sure, but it better be fucking brilliant if you want it to escape the trappings of the superhero genre.
The reality is that Josh Trank was not ready for this kind of project. There were a lot of stories of the guy being an evasive dickhead and that the assistant director was the real hero on set. It was also clear he did not give a shit about the material. That's fine, there are plenty of comic directors who didn't like the comics (Burton, etc.), but it didn't help him in comic circles either.
Plus, people just didn't care about another Fantastic Four movie at the time. It looked like the first two movies but with depression. I think the only way the Fantastic Four can really work is in a 1950s/60s era. I'm talking Mr. Fantastic chatting cold war politics with JFK while smoking a pipe kind of world. You could play the kind of hopeful, hammy sci-fi straight in that era and make them stick out a bit more in the pack of supe movies. I don't know, just my 2 cents.
