The whole premise of democracy is voicing your own opinion through voting (as best as it is encapsulated by the political candidates). That you are making a real impact happens when other people share your opinion. Which is EXACTLY as it should be.
You do not vote to shape the world in your image. Voting is a mechanism to balance the opinions of the population and mold policy according to that balance.
Strategic voting ("if I don't vote for the big two, my vote means nothing") is retarded, seen this way. You are meant to voice your opinion as best as possible, that it "makes a difference" is contingent on the other peoples opinions.
