Half of it was listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange, traded mainly in Hong Kong way back when, half is owned by the government. And the reason you know it's not owned by the Mainland is because it used to run really well.
In fact, most of the shops the protesters are attacking aren't even China-owned, they're owned or franchised by a Hong Kong holding company. It does have some ties to China, because it does business there, like a lot of businesses. This is less a democratic revolution and more like the Joker movie.
