The real trick to telling the difference, other than putting a lot of work into genealogy and accomplishments and fight records and teaching qualifications, etc, is to check if they fight from a flat foot and a locked hip, or if they balance on the balls of their feet like a boxer and can throw a cross, instead of having to take a step every time they punch. Also, can they defend against a boxing-style face punch, or do they wind up their blocks and bring the non-punching hand down to the hip and pose after a move?
But in all honesty, any karate is better than nothing, as long as the teachers aren't complete Cobra Kai psychos.
