Varied personal goals, varied personal opportunities. Extreme outliers are removed from any properly performed statistical analysis pool.
Most people do not escape their social class within their lifetime. Middle class people rarely become wealthy, nor go completely broke. People born into poverty rarely escape it, and people born into wealth rarely lose it all.
Poverty obviously doesn't equal crime, but there is a strong correlation between the two, and it's not difficult to see how poverty could cause crime.
While it's not impossible, it's certainly difficult to get a good education and a good job when your entire environment encourages you to stay where you are - both your "superiors" looking down at you for being poor, and your "equals" spiting you for trying to escape. There is absolutely and undeniably crab bucket mentality among poor people, and black people, and any "underdog" social class. But it's a self-propagating mentality, taught to kids early on, one difficult to escape without outside help.
