John may have coined the term, but nobody gave a shit about his autistic rant over the Iron Giant because it happened to be a movie beloved by a lot of people, despite flopping really badly.
The current cartoon trend of having thin lined, noodle arms and potato faces started exactly in 2010, where Adventure Time was premiered in Cartoon Network.
Why Adventure Time in particular? Because for the first time in years after the dark age of CN, they struck gold when AT got big. AT popularized minimalist designs, whimsical settings+DEEPEST LORE and made up words for humor (i.e; what the bleep blop are you bleeping about), that every network wanted their hands on their very own version of AT. Why do you think so many cartoons of the 2010s visually look similar to each other?>but this has nothing to do with Calarts
Yes it does. Pen Ward, Alex Hirsch, and J.G. Quintel all studied at CalARTS, and they were responsible for making three of the most popular cartoons of the decade, it’s no wonder that other networks took cues from their work and have been wanting to strike lightning before the decade ends.
Sabrina Cotugno and Matt Braly also went to CalARTS and the former is getting her own cartoon, from what I’ve heard.
