Jon Kent tells Clark that he's special and has the power to determine who lives and dies. Clark clearly wants to save everybody.
Martha tells him to live for himself and stop trying to save everyone. Clark dies fighting a monster.
This is still the same Superman as always, just with a quarter of the personality and unaffected from being raised by Randian assholes
