Turns out, you can't actually write ANYthing without criticism or the idea that it's forced or pandering
Someone somewhere will always try to link the existence of something to it's inherent qualities being the sole thing that people are interested in
Most people won't be able to give you a good gay character/relationship that is the main character because they refuse to separate the idea that a character exists and that a character is gay--always combining it to the character exists because gay
So just write a gay couple, ignore the haters, at the very least you can say that you tried.
