>>109014382Anime is different because the roots of same sex attraction has different history. It's more like roleplay, which goes back in time when they translated books like Anne of Green Gables and Little Princess to train young girls to be "good wives, wise mothers". Instead they picked up things like sisterhood you see between Anne and Diana, which probably would be confused as lesbian romance in these days (they literally confess their love to each other in the novels). Shoujo manga takes lot of influence of novels like this. See Oniisama e... which is pretty good story about this type of dynamics, it has LGBT themes but in the end it's a coming-of-age story for girls.
Then there's the Takarazuka theater, where women played all the roles, even male roles. The fans of this kind of theater were all women and they were rather obsessive about these actresses. The Takarazuka culture and the liberal changes in Taisho era still has impact in anime.
In Hibike Euphonium you see Kumiko and Reina being sister-like friends like Anne and Diana, they have very close bond and they even have their own "confession of love". But they are still both straight, and people confused their bond as yuri, and now they are mad when the new trailer for the movie is very het.
The exceptions are directors like Kunihiko Ikuhara who has criticized this kind of mindset in his works, like Yurikuma Arashi or his new work, Sarazanmai (which has gay guys, though). I think anime is changing a lot from its Class S days and will have more actual gay romance (like Yuri on Ice did), but it's not the same as this woke bullshit you see in cartoons.
